Our new Wanker of the Week is the magistrate who recently sentenced pensioner Sylvia Hardy to a week in jail for refusing to pay £50 of her council tax. We don't know his name - Ms.Hardy has hers plastered all over the national press but magistrates, apparently, are able to bask in anonymity however stupid, unfair or vicious their decisions.

The magistrate is quoted as saying that Ms.Hardy "should not be seen as a martyr".

Well I've got news for you, Mr.Wanker Magistrate. That's exactly what she is. A martyr is someone who suffers for a cause - and yes, I have looked the word up in the dictionary which is evidently more than you can manage. Ms.Hardy refused to pay this year's increase in her council tax because she believed she was right not to do so - she claims her council tax has risen by 50% in the last ten years, far in advance of any increase in the real value of her pension. She is suffering for doing what she believed to be right. Ergo, she is a martyr.

Mr.W.M. also said that he "had no choice but to send her to prison". So here's another piece of news for you, W.M. You did have a choice. There is always a choice - you can always choose not to do something if you are sufficiently honest. You could have simply stood up, said "I know what the law says but I'm not doing it!" and walked out.

True, if you'd done this you might not remain a magistrate very long, but that was a decision you should have made. Ms.Hardy made it - she knew what was right, she did it, and she is prepared to take the consequences. You knew, or should have known, that what you were doing was wrong, but you lacked the honesty and guts to face up to your responsibility. Being a magistrate was more important to you than being a righteous and humane person.

In your own pathetic little way you're cast in the same mould as the concentration camp guards who were "only doing their jobs".
