Western democracy, our cherished way of life and our traditional institutions have never been under any threat from terrorists. What did these lunatics expect to achieve by bombing London Underground? Did they seriously think that because they'd callously killed a few of us, we'd all stop going to work, that our children would stay home from school, that we'd be too scared to vote in the next election, that we'd give up going to the library or the shops, that football grounds would be deserted and Mrs.GOS would spend her days hiding in the cupboard under the stairs? Hitler, the Kaiser and Napoleon couldn't manage it. Why should a few sad, ignorant little nutters in hoodies think they could do any better? Ah, but they had a secret weapon, didn't they? No, not Osama Binliner. Not Captain Hookza, either. It was Tony Bliar, the terrorists' friend. Mark my words, the real enemy is our own government. From the upper-class tradition of fox-hunting to the working-class tradition of a pint and a fag on a Saturday night, from supporting torture in American concentration-camps to getting embroiled in embarrassing and illegal adventures in Iraq and Afghanistan, from robbing our elected representatives in local councils of the right they exercise on our behalf to run schools to dictating what we can and cannot say about religion, race and consequently politics, our democracy and our way of life are under comprehensive attack from those we elected to serve us. Muffled and confused by having his head stuck so far up Bush's backside, Tony Bliar is thrashing about and causing us damage. Today we hear it confirmed that our legal system has become completely subservient to the Americans. If the Americans want to prosecute and imprison a British subject, they no longer have to have any evidence - they simply have to ask for him to be extradited*, as three British bank-workers have just found to their cost. There was a time when one of the primary functions of our government was to protect its citizens, but evidently those days are past. It would be fairer to say that the primary function of Bliar's government is to persecute its citizens. So congratulations, Osama Binliner. You've won. You wanted to threaten democracy, and under threat it certainly is. Not bad for a bearded weirdy who lives in a cave and wears a nightshirt all the time. Here's a quote from Simon Jenkins, who puts it much better than I can. Well, he uses posher words, anyway: "There never was a terrorist threat to western civilisation or democracy, ony to western lives and property. The threat becomes systemic only when democracy loses its confidence and when its leaders are weak, as now. Terror attacks are for the police. For George Bush and Blair to demand a "long war" against Bin Laden and, by implication, a long suppression of civil liberty is ludicrous. Western civilisation is not some simpering weakling that cowers before a fanatic's might, pleading for leaders to protect it by all means, however illegal. It has been proof against Islamic expansionism since the 17th Century. It is not at risk." * The EU has adopted the principle of the "European Arrest Warrant", whereby if a court in one EU country issues an order for the arrest of someone in another EU country, the second country is required to hand the suspect over, no questions asked. And the EU has signed a treaty giving America the same powers. It would be interesting to know what would happen if we issued an arrest warrant for someone in America, but then that isn't likely to happen, is it, as we haven't taken on the mantle of the World's Policeman? However, only 8 out of 15 EU countries have so far ratified the EAW system. Germany recently refused to hand over to Spain a suspected terrorist because they said the EAW wasn't legal in Germany. As usual, po-faced politically-correct Britain is almost the only country to take EU rules and regulations seriously. either on this site or on the World Wide Web.
