The papers are telling us that when Chancellor Gordon Brown unveils his budget this week, he will announce his capitulation to the fascist tree-huggers by increasing the road tax on large 4x4 cars. They suggest that the tax on something like a Range Rover will rise to £185 a year. What a pointless thing to do. Even if you accept that the fascist tree-huggers are right (which of course we don't, as a point of principle), the idea that anyone who can afford to pay up to £80,000 for a car, is going to be put off by an extra £20 road tax is ludicrous. Come on, Gordon, own up! This is just another sneaky way to squeeze a bit more tax out of us, isn't it? There is one good thing though - it sounds as though Gordon is not intending to penalise all 4x4 drivers. If Greenpeace are to be believed, a 4.2 litre Range Rover emits twice its own weight in CO2 every year, but evidently Gordon realises that the majority of 4x4 cars are things like the Toyota Rav4 and the Nissan X-Trail which are actually no bigger than a family saloon and do a great deal less damage to the ozone layer than the average milk-float. This is something the fascist tree-huggers don't have the wit to see. They find it easier to bleat "two wheels good, four wheels ba-a-ad". I expect they think if they could manage to keep all us country-dwellers off the roads it would stop us being unkind to the poor little foxy-woxies. P.S. The GOS went for a walk in the fields the other day and saw a damn great dog-fox, trotting calmly across the path without a care in the world. Bastard. either on this site or on the World Wide Web.
